Environmental Assessment of Fuel Cell Systems |
|
National Research Council Canada and Energy Ventures Inc., 1999-2000 |
|
As a guiding principle incorporated in the Canadian Environmental Protection Act
(1999), pollution prevention is the priority approach given to environmental
protection in Canada. Fuel cells are recognized as a key pollution prevention
technology for energy production and have been a major focus of research and development
activities involving both public and private sector organizations. Crechem, the National
Research Council Canada and Energy Ventures Inc. worked closely to
identify the environmental advantages of fuel cells over conventional energy
production methods. With the help of a number of software tools, the team assessed
the air emissions and other environmental indices of each fuel cell system under
different feedstock and operation scenarios. In particular, Crechem conducted
preliminary design and performance evaluation of several fuel cell systems
to provide essential data required for the life cycle assessment.
